Pattonville High School's Student Council teamed up with the student councils at Hazelwood West and Parkway North high schools for an all-abilities night for some of their classmates.
The first annual "Night to Shine" on Feb. 3 was sponsored for free by the student councils for students in the functional skills classes at all three high schools. The evening offered music, dancing, crafts, games and snacks for participants. The functional skills classes are Special School District (SSD) classes that are designed to help students with special needs learn interpersonal and general job-related skills necessary to transition to employment after graduation.
"Missouri student councils partner with Special Olympics but we wanted to do something in our community and in our school for our students," said Heather Lopez-Johnston, who co-sponsors Pattonville's Student Council with fellow teacher Jacqueline Saxton. "We wanted all students to feel like they are involved and vital part of our school. We decided to partner up with other schools and rotate location each year. Our students were very excited for this event."
