Pattonville speech and debate students earn multiple honors

The Pattonville High School Speech and Debate team hosted its annual Randy Pierce Winter Classic speech and debate tournament on December 8 and 9. More than 500 students from 30 schools from across the state participated in the student-run event. Pattonville speech and debate team members had to recruit judges to cover more than 650 judging rounds. The the team has celebrated numerous awards at regional competitions during the first semester of the school year.

At the Greater St. Louis (GSL) Conference Preseason Tournament, seven students received honors. Rachel McCormick and Kaliahna Carroll placed first and Harith Al Yuwaili and Mohaimen Al Yuwaili placed fourth in novice Duet Improv. Eli Card placed third in novice Impromptu Speaking. Brianna Smith and Brittany Strasburger placed sixth in varsity Duet Improv.

During the Parkway West tournament, Harith Al Yuwaili and Mohaimen Al Yuwaili placed first in Top Novice Duo Interpretation. The following students were also semifinalists: Hannah Berg in novice Radio Speaking, Emily Lu in Prose/Poetry and Edmond Zhang in varsity Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Bell Tucci placed fifth in novice Radio Speaking.

At the GSL Conference Tournament No. 1, Camilla Wilkerson was among the top novices in varsity Policy Debate and earned first in novice Radio Speaking. Anna de Garcia and Eden Magana Lopez placed second in novice Public Forum Debate. In addition to her honors at the preseason tournament, Strasburger earned second in Storytelling and fifth in varsity Radio Speaking.

During the Francis Howell North Events Tournament, Devin Zahner placed fifth in varsity International Extemporaneous Speaking. Harith Al Yuwaili and Mohaimen Al Yuwaili placed sixth in novice Duo Interpretation and Strasburger placed sixth in Storytelling.

At the Troy Buchanan Debate Tournament, Tajh Martin and Tucci earned second in novice Public Forum Debate. Lu placed third in novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate. And, in novice Policy Debate, Wilkerson placed fifth and Lacey Harder and McCormick placed sixth. In addition, the team won fourth place in overall Debate Sweepstakes. Additional members of the team were Krista Baught, Card, Lihn Chittakhone, Adam Kendrick, Mariyah Simpson, Xmiena Rogers Stamps, Aubrey Tendiel and James Vie.

At the GSL Conference Tournament No. 2, Will Polster earned second place in Domestic Extemporaneous; Harith Al Yuwaili and Mohaimen Al Yuwaili earned sixth in Duo Interpretation; Polster and Nolan Prebianca earned second in Public Forum Debate; and Lu placed first in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate.

At the Clayton Varsity Tournament, Polster placed first in Informative Speaking and third in Domestic Extemporaneous; Harith Al Yuwaili and  Mohaimen Al Yuwaili placed sixth in Duo Interpretation; Polster and Prebianca placed first in Champion Public Forum Debate; and Devin Zahner was a  semifinalist in International Extemporaneous.

At the Ladue Novice Tournament, Sarah Burke placed sixth in Interpretation; Marianne Pacheco placed fourth in Poetry; and Lu placed fifth in Poetry.
