Backpacks of all different colors and designs were lined up against the walls in the gym at Drummond Elementary School on a recent afternoon. Students walked into the building empty-handed but left with everything they would need for the first day of school.

Marc Mares and his organization Kids and Families in Need along with his partners from Long John Silver’s and A&W provided backpacks for 250 children from Drummond Elementary School and Holman Middle School. They are among several organizations who collected and donated supplies for Pattonville students this year.

“We put pencils, pens, glue, markers, colored crayons, notebook paper, notebooks, folders and a binder in every backpack we give out,” Mares said. “In total, we put around 20 items into it, so it’s everything that's on the checklist except for a calculator.”

This is the fifth year the organization has donated backpacks to the Pattonville School District. It also provided backpacks to University City, Ferguson Florissant and Parkway schools districts this year.

“We had a huge response today and probably had 50 people come through already,” Mares said. “For the ones that were unable to make it, they come to school on Day 1 and we have it waiting for them.”

School supplies were also collected and donated by the Community Helping Ministry, Maryland Heights Police Department in collaboration with Simple Church, Pattonville Educational Support Professionals (PESP), Walmart and other individuals, organizations and staff.

Families in need of supplies should contact their school office or counseling staff for assistance.
